Expert Review - Style and Warmth in an Ideal Location

Sodium Boutique Hotel stands elegantly on one of Ciutadella’s most bustling and charming avenues. Walking distance to all the best spots, but not embedded in the hustle and bustle, Sodium is in a great location. Stepping out of the hotel, you walk right into the charming Plaza d’Artrutx, where you will find people happily dining al fresco in the island’s authentic deck chairs, enjoying the gentle gurgle of the fountain that surrounds the lovely “El Secreto” sculpture by Laetitia Lara. You are just a minute walk to one of Ciutadella’s most up-and-coming restaurants: Katú, and only a stone's throw away from numerous shops and bakeries.

Stepping into Sodium you feel instant vibes of style, quiet, warmth and sophistication, thanks to the lightly humming music and the hip design from hotel owners Pierangela and Marcello. This seasoned hotelier couple have expertly converted the stunning 19th Century manor house into one of the most well-known boutique hotels in Ciutadella. Decorated throughout with fabulous contemporary art, much of which is done by Pierangela’s father, and some available for purchase, the hotel is not only classy, but also friendly.

The ground floor is dedicated to the hotel’s reception area where Pierangela welcomes guests in the morning and serves a fantastic breakfast. She thoughtfully spreads the table (or at times the buffet area) with local delicacies. Not only are the colors and variety of the foods breathtaking, but the flavours she carefully selects will connect you immediately to Menorca: the traditional ensaimada pastry filled with cream from Ciutadella’s famous El Diamante bakery, a delightful selection of fresh bread and rolls, fruits, a perfectly ripe avocado and local tomatoes, Catalan yogurt with berries, farm eggs, jams from the island…and more! And she even will make you pancakes or eggs to order! Breakfast is optional at Sodium but highly recommended and served between 8 and 10am.

The hotel’s six rooms are different from one another but all have the same tasteful style and functionality that is consistent throughout the property. Each room is named after an element in the periodic table. We had the pleasure of staying in Sodium, where we enjoyed our own private, shaded terrace overlooking the eclectic rooftops of Ciutadella. Litio has a beautiful terrace with loungers and an umbrella and Rubidio has access to its own private rooftop terrace. In addition to a balcony with views to Plaza d’Artrutx, Potassio features an original tile floor that is marvelous. Many of the rooms, like Francio for example, are spacious and have a separate area with a sofa-bed.

Check-in to the hotel is exceptionally easy and allows you to come and go as you please with ease. Afternoons and evenings the reception area remains a quiet space for reading, working or browsing some of the hotel’s terrific books.

Guests receive a welcome message before arrival specifying their entrance code, which works to enter both the front door of the hotel and your room. No key required! And you will find that the hotel is exquisitely clean. Recommended especially for couples.
