Son Vell: A Palatial Retreat Where Menorca’s Past Meets its Most Promising Future

Tucked away in the poetic southwest corner of Menorca, where dry-stone walls trace forgotten paths through farmland and olive groves, Son Vell announces itself not with fanfare, but with a noble whisper — the kind you hear through the rustling leaves that adorn the ancient oak trees lining its long, gated drive.

The golden-hued, perfectly symmetrical façade of a 18th-century neo-classical palace rising above the landscape like a dream long held, now carefully restored, is better in real life than anywhere else. Ancient olive trees stand like sentinels, a curious cactus and succulent garden flank the grand entrance, a subtle hint that what lies ahead will be anything but ordinary. There are no boxwood hedges, no baroque fountains here — only the warm, earthy elegance of Menorca, reimagined through a lens of heritage, sustainability, and soul.

The Flagship Jewel

Son Vell is the flagship jewel in the Vestige Collection’s growing portfolio of luxury, historic properties in Menorca, and what a debut it is. After a soft launch in 2023, this season marks its second full chapter — and it already feels like a classic as uniformed staff hum about quietly throughout the spectacular, seemingly mature gardens, ensuring guests have it all.

Once a noble weekend retreat for one of Ciutadella’s most fortunate families, Son Vell now hosts guests with the quiet splendor of a bygone era, offering thirty-five exquisite rooms and suites nestled in the main house and within the lovingly converted stables and barns. The vision? To restore not just the structure, but the property’s spirit — and the result is a rural lux hotel that doesn’t just belong in Menorca, it feels born from it.

A Restoration of Reverence

The restoration is nothing short of meticulous and entirely impressive. After months of over forty architects and local artisans using original Menorcan tools from the birth year of the building, Son Vell’s delightful stonework has been delicately preserved and now glows happily in the afternoon sun.

Son Vell’s restoration team committed to three goals: 1) to revive the classic charm of the main house - the precious nucleus of the property, 2) to transform the former barns and stables into attractive and comfortable accommodation for people, and 3) to unite the different buildings of the estate into one cohesive, functional and beautiful oasis. This commitment, in combination with the restoration team’s use of artisan expertise, traditional craftsmanship and authentic materials, has resulted in a living, singing, authentic property bursting with charm.

Ancient irrigation rills still wind through the gardens, channeling water as they have for centuries. The surrounding grounds stretch across 180 hectares of pastoral beauty — olive orchards, hay fields, a thriving vegetable garden that feeds its two onsite restaurants, and fields dotted with more than a dozen ancient talayotic stones in the distance.

A Premiere Country Estate

As guests, you’re not checking in — you’re arriving, like a welcome visitor to a country estate. And indeed, that's how it feels from the moment you're greeted by Gary, whose tour of the property brims with knowledge and passion. His pride in the integrity of the project is contagious. As he guides you through the property’s history and hidden corners, there’s a sense of being invited behind the curtain of something truly rare.

Rooms are as serene as they are sophisticated and functional — earth-toned palettes, natural finishes, kiln-fired clay tile floors cool beneath your feet and royal bedding beneath your body. Private terraces open onto meadows, and every detail has been chosen with purpose, echoing the calm beauty of the island itself.

Experiences Rooted in the Land

Son Vell offers an immersive experience — not just a stay. Guests can saddle up one of the estate’s horses for a guided ride, take a bicycle down a sun-bleached path that leads straight to the sea, join a yoga session at sunrise amidst the lush gardens or watch the stars sparkle in the night gazing lounge. For those who wish to venture beyond the property, the concierge team curates bespoke outings: private boat charters, jeep tours through Menorca’s wild interior, or guided hikes that unearth the island’s prehistoric past.

Yet it’s entirely possible to never leave the grounds at all. The serenity is so complete, the experiences so enriching, the food so good, the service so professional, that you may find that the world beyond the dry-stone perimeter fades away.

Sa Clarisa & Vermell: Dining with a Sense of Place

Lunch at Sa Clarisa is a masterclass in relaxed Mediterranean dining. Set on a shaded terrace and surrounded by mature gardens where birdsong provides the background track, it’s the kind of place where time slows, and flavors linger. The ingredients — many sourced from the estate’s own gardens — are fresh, honest, and beautifully plated.

Come evening, Vermell transforms the experience. The dining room, aglow with soft lighting and below a stunning original beamed roof, you feel intimate yet grand. It's the kind of dinner where conversation flows easily, and you find yourself lingering long after dessert.

Breakfast here is equally elegant — light dishes made to order, fresh-pressed juices and local cheeses. It’s the kind of start to the day that feels like an offering, not a routine.

A Legacy in the Olive Trees

There is a quiet kind of majesty to Son Vell. It’s in the way the breeze rustles through olive branches and the birds speak to one another as they have for centuries. In the way the architecture embraces the landscape, rather than imposing upon it. And in the way guests are made to feel — not simply accommodated, but genuinely welcome and cherished.

Every ancient olive tree along the paths of the Son Vell estate seem to whisper the same story: that when we care for what came before us, we can create something enduring. Son Vell is a shining example of that philosophy — a palatial retreat grounded in place, history, and heart. It’s a place not to be rushed, but savored. A place where the past has been restored, and the future feels full of promise. If there is one address in Menorca that captures the island’s evolving essence, it is here.
