How many lighthouses are there in Menorca?

Menorca has a wonderful network of seven main lighthouses (locally called faros), each perched on the various points along the island’s gorgeous coastline, offering visitors spectacular views and unique experiences. These special structures are not only functional maritime beacons, but also beautiful landmarks, often set against wild cliffs and turquoise seas - definitely worth visiting!

Which lighthouses are best to visit in Menorca?

Faro de Favàritx

Nestled inside the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park on the north side of the island, not far from the capital city of Mahón, the Favàritx (pronounced fa-va-reach) lighthouse is perhaps the most picturesque of the seven. With its black-and-white striped tower, standing tall above the stark, lunar-like landscape and blue sea, this is one of Menorca’s most photographed lighthouses.

Faro de Cavalleria

Also on the north coast of Menorca, a visit to the Cavalleria lighthouse is a great outing for all ages. It features a white, cylindrical tower on dramatic red cliffs and views of the sunset from here are spectacular, among the most famous on the island.

Other lighthouses in Menorca:

  • Faro de Punta Nati: Surrounded by dry stone walls and barren land, the atmospheric Punta Nati lighthouse, near Ciutadella, features a squat stone lighthouse built after tragic shipwrecks in the early 20th century.
  • Faro de Cap d’Artrutx: Near Cala en Bosch, on the southwest corner of Menorca, you will find the Cap d'Artrutx (pronounced are-true-ch) lighthouse, a tall, slender tower with black-and-white stripes and a restaurant/bar in the keeper’s house, making it a good sunset stop.
  • Faro de Sa Farola: At the entrance to Ciutadella’s port (west coast), Sa Farola is a smaller lighthouse on low cliffs, guiding ships into the harbour and is a popular walking and cycling route along the coast.
  • Faro de Sant Carles (or Castell de Sant Felip Lighthouse): At Mahón's harbour entrance, on the east coast of Menorca, you will find the Faro de Sant Carles, originally linked to the 16th-century Sant Felip fortress. While important historically, it is less dramatic in landscape.
  • Faro de la Isla del Aire: On Illa de l’Aire, a small islet off Menorca’s southeastern tip (near Punta Prima), the Faro de la Isla del Aire is the tallest lighthouse on Menorca (38 m), with black-and-white bands. The island is home to the black lizard of Menorca (Podarcis lilfordi).
