Markets in Mahón
-
Mercat des Claustre - Located for the past 140 years inside the old cloister of the church of the Virgen del Carmen, the Mercat des Claustre, popularly known as “Sa Plaça” is a must visit when in Mahón. The building was built by the Carmelite order between 1750 and 1808. Neoclassical in style, it has had many uses over time, mainly after the confiscation of church property by Mendizábal in 1835, when the Civil Guard barracks, the prison, the courthouse, the market and even a school coexisted in the same space. Today, you can find fruit, vegetables, sausages, meat and all kinds of local and seasonal food, now coexisting with wonderful restaurants and bars. Activities are organised throughout the year and, especially in summer, the cloister courtyard becomes a space for concerts and cultural activities. The market is open everyday except Sunday.
